No offense to anyone
here, but I've noticed only one black person on Dragonball. He is
Assistant Black of the Red Ribbon Army. Is it just me, or could
Akira Toriyama be racist? Come on, one person, and he's a villain,
too. That is wrong. If he were a hero, then I could sorta see the
positive role-model he(Assistant Black) could be. Once again, I mean
no offense to anyone.

There are some Black
people when Gohan is in High School. A few episodes before the
Tenkaichi Martial Arts, Gohan goes to a movie studio and black
people are working with the director.

Well, there's almost no
oriental people in most American cartoons. Even if they're in them,
they're there just to be made fun of or to be given a stereotypical
voice.
...and Uubu's not black. He's allegedly Indian, which

To be technical, indians
are a combination of african and asian. So Ubuu is black in a
somewhat detached way. Umm, dragon ball racist? A T is
biased/racist. The "black face" renditions of the black characters
is very racist. Mr. Popo, is a mockery of the islamic culture, but
dragon ball isn't intended to be religiously accurate any ways. The
issue is however the way he is drawn is inappropriate. The way akira
toriyama draws black people is very racist and biased. The issue
isn't how often they appear, since rarely does one see black people
in manga any ways. The issue is what they look like. They are drawn
in a totally inappropriate manner. Look how inhuman popo looks like
next to goku. He has beady eyes, and goofy pink lips. Black people
don't look that drastically different. The lips and eyes thing is
totally wrong.

Yeah, Mr. Popo is not
human. Besides, look at our (by that I mean that of North America)
culture. How many superstars are Asian that aren't martial artists?
Jackie Chan, Bruce and Brandon Lee, Jet Li, Chow Yun Fat, Michelle
Yeoh, they are not famous for being spectacular actors or singers or
whatever. If I said that America was racist for not supporting Asian
actors, that would be just like saying DBZ is racist towards black
people. BTW, there are no black saiyans because that is just how
their race is. All Nameks are green, that's just how their species
is.

One reason there aren't
many blacks in Dragon Ball and Z is because there aren't that many
blacks in Japan...And since Dragon Ball and Z take place in Japan,
it'd be pointless to put blacks in it because then it wouldn't seem
to realistic...
And saying Japan is racist is no more than
the pot calling the kettle black from a country that houses the Ku
Klux Klan...

Hey Pikuhan, you are
thinking of "The filthy animals" (Conan, Rey Misterio, Billy Kidman,
and temporarily Disco inferno, and of course tigress :-) ).
I
guess it was only a matter time before someone would try and label
DBZ or any other anime racist. Remember that America is a "Melting
pot" of different cultures and Japan has a good majority aisian
people. Like someone said earlier, black people are rare in Japan,
so the creator of DBZ is making characters based on what he is used
to being around (aisian people). It probably never occurred to him
to put a black man/woman into the story. Besides, he was creating a
comic, not trying to be politically
correct. It would have been
interesting to have a black character in DBZ, but dont think the guy
is racist because there isnt one! Geeeeezzzz.

akira toriyama had given them lips like freezah it would have been
much better. Instead he used that old school racist black face look.
Black people do not look like that. Not sure if anyone has seen
"bamboozled". I never even thought about dbz as racist like that
before. That sucks, because I liked the series. In the original burn
up anime there was a guy(90% sure he was black) called Banba. He
looked fine. |

Well, you guys can
defend DBZ all you want, but the bottom line is, it probably IS
racist, and AT probably is as well. Japanese, in general, are
racist. Japan is probably the most racist country in the world,
against whites AND blacks. They hate foreigners.
Unlike in
America though, they won't call you names or hurt you
physically...they will just constantly resent the fact that you are
there, sneer at you or ignore you completely...I went to Japan once,
I couldn't even buy anything, all the store clerks in town wouldn't
let me purchase anything. |

Yeah Dragon Ball is
definatley not racist, I dont find it the least bit racist towards
me. Its a Japanese cartoon aired in Japan, the population is
Japanese, there arent going to be many black people. Just because a
show is targeted towards a certain audience doesnt make it racist.
If it did then all of the shows with white people would be

Yes, Japan in the most

One reasons
it seems blacks are getting so much extra treatment with the media
and stuff like that is because some of the people are trying to make

No, not really. After having been forced into slavery and stripped
of their culture, you think having their own channel makes up for
it? If they have so many extra privaledges, then they would not have
any problems, but they do. Paikuhan stated that the issue in DBZ WAS
NOT represntation. He said "THE ISSUE IS HOW THEY ARE DRAWN". He
didn't care if they were hardly there, but he did care that they
gave them those stupid looking pink lips. I agree, that DBZ is

Obviously the biggest
reason there aren't black people in DB has already been stated. This
is a Japanese show and there are very few blacks in Japan. This
isn't an American product so you can't judge it as if it is one.
Another reason is simply because they don't know about the
issue. Racism between blacks and whites is a problem that we have in
America. They know little about it in Japan. At the time DB was
airing nobody thought it would ever make it to the US.
And
technically there aren't many whites in anime either. Because of the
way the characters are drawn they may look white. But actually most
of them are Asian. If you've ever seen another anime with actual
white people (i.e. Americans) depicted in it then you know there is
a difference. |

It doesn't matter how
often black people are seen in DBZ, that's not the problem. THE
PROBLEM IS HOW THEY ARE DRAWN. Let's say Mr. Popo isn't human, What
about Killer from Dragon Ball? And about the black baseball player
show in an episode of Saiyan Saga. The had the same big goofy pink
lips. Even if A T hasn't seen that many black people, I know he
hasn't seen any that looked remotely like that. That's my reasoning.
And no, I'm not black, but I have friends who are. This critique
isn't coming from them either.

I was not accusing the country of
anything. I was accusing the person. All countries exhibit racism,

When you call AT racist
you are applying an American idea to a Japanese person. That just
doesn't make sense. You can't judge them by our standards. Why would
he be racist against black people? There aren't any even around him.
In his life he doesn't think twice about it. You just think that
because in your life it is an issue. Racism against blacks is an
issue in America, not in Japan.
The black people in DB were
drawn as stereotypes, true. But that has nothing to do with racism.
Since they know so little of black people, that's the only way they
know to draw them. Look at how asians are treated in American shows.
Southpark, The Simpsons, movies, etc all treat them as stereotypes.
They are either kung fu freaks or little nerds with computers for
brains. (Southpark did another stereotype about them, but I could
get modded for saying it.) |
